At Play Like a Girl Australia, we’re all about celebrating the unique journeys of our members. This month, we’re excited to highlight Jordan, a dedicated swimmer, leader, and graduate of our Empowered to Lead course.

From her beginnings as a passionate multi-sport athlete to her time in the United States on a swimming scholarship, Jordan’s story is a testament to resilience, ambition, and the power of community.

A Passion for Sport from the Start

Jordan’s love for sport started early, as she immersed herself in tennis, netball, hockey, athletics, basketball, and swimming. But swimming stood out.

“When I told my mum I wanted to wake up at 5am on a Saturday to train, I think she realised it wasn’t just a phase,” Jordan says.

“Swimming gave me something to love outside of everyday life. It wasn’t just about the training—it was about belonging to a community, achieving goals, and constantly striving to improve.”

That passion propelled her across the globe to Wayne State University in the United States, where she earned a swimming scholarship.

Reflecting on her time there, Jordan says, “It was an experience I’ll never forget. I learned so much about myself as a person and grew in ways I never imagined.”

Fond Memories in and Out of the Pool

For Jordan, her time at university in the U.S. is a highlight of her sporting career. “Moving overseas and swimming for my college for five years was a dream come true.

I still wish I could relive those moments—they shaped me into who I am today.”

One memory stands out: her performance at the Division 2 NCAA. “I didn’t expect much from myself going into that competition, but I exceeded my own expectations.

It taught me a valuable lesson: you’re capable of so much more than you think if you trust the process and stay committed.”

Joining Empowered to Lead

Encouraged by her Dad, Jordan joined the Empowered to Lead course. “He came home so inspired and said, ‘You’ve got to do this.’ I was starting my full-time job and felt like the timing was perfect to develop my leadership skills and build confidence for this next chapter.”

She went into the course not knowing what to expect but hoped to gain practical tools and connect with others in similar situations. “I’ve always admired leaders who empower others, and I wanted to learn how to do the same. The course exceeded my expectations—I left with strategies, insights, and a deeper understanding of myself.”

Impact Beyond Sport

Jordan credits the course with fostering significant personal and professional growth. “The Empowered to Lead course taught me so much about myself and others. I now know how to leverage my strengths to empower others, and I’ve developed a greater sense of self-awareness.”

One activity left a particularly lasting impression: the Inner Heroine exercise. “Creating an alter ego to overcome challenges gave me a whole new way to approach difficult situations. It’s like stepping into a different persona to boost your confidence and performance. I’ve carried that with me ever since.”

Advice for Aspiring Female Leaders

When asked what advice she’d give to others, Jordan shared practical and heartfelt tips:

  • Believe in Yourself: “You can achieve so much more than you think. Success in sport and leadership requires resilience, so don’t be discouraged by setbacks.”
  • Surround Yourself with Support: “Find mentors and like-minded people who will uplift and inspire you. That support makes a huge difference.”
  • Set Goals You Can See: “One of the best things I ever did was create goal walls and vision boards. Seeing those goals every day motivated me to work harder and stay focused.”

What It Means to Play Like a Girl

“To Play Like a Girl means leading and playing with strength, passion, and resilience,” Jordan says.

“It’s about breaking down barriers, inspiring the next generation, and showing that women and girls can excel and lead just as well as anyone else.”

The Importance of Initiatives Like Play Like a Girl

Jordan believes that organisations like Play Like a Girl are essential for fostering confidence and leadership in women and girls. “These initiatives remind us that leadership isn’t about fitting into a mould—it’s about embracing your unique strengths.

Not all leaders are loud or outgoing, and that’s okay. Play Like a Girl helps women see that they can lead in their own way.”

A Vision for a Better Future

Looking ahead, Jordan dreams of a world where women and girls feel safe and supported in all aspects of their lives. “I’d love to see a world where no one feels unsafe—whether at home, in the workplace, or in their community.”

Jordan’s journey is a shining example of the incredible impact sport and leadership can have on a person’s life. Her resilience, passion, and commitment inspire us all to believe in our potential and strive for greatness.
