Women in Sport Leadership Scholarships Now Open for Regional Victoria

This initiative is about creating opportunities that change lives for girls in rural and regional communities.

At Play Like a Girl Australia, we believe every girl deserves the chance to lead with confidence, no matter where she lives. That is why, thanks to our partnership with Global Power Generation, we are offering fully funded scholarships for girls living in and around Berrybank, Lismore, Cressy and surrounding communities within the Corangamite and Golden Plains Local Government Areas.

Why This Matters

Growing up in rural Victoria can be incredible, the open spaces, the strong sense of community, and sport at the heart of local life. But for many girls, it also means limited access to leadership development, networks, and role models.

As one parent told us:
"Programs like this just don’t usually make it to towns like ours. For my daughter to join from home and connect with women all over Australia was unbelievable."

These scholarships remove those barriers and open the door to something powerful:

- Confidence Building: Unlock the courage to voice your ideas, step into new opportunities, and trust yourself in any situation.

- Connection to a National Network: Building friendships and professional connections with inspiring women across Australia.

- Essential Life Skills: Developing resilience, leadership strategies, communication and mindset tools that last well beyond sport.

Meet Sophie: From Quiet to Confident Leader

"Before the program, I didn’t see myself as a leader. I was the quiet one who never spoke up."

That is how Sophie describes life before joining Empowered to Lead. Living in a small regional town, Sophie loved sport but often avoided leadership roles because she lacked confidence.

Everything changed during the six-week program.
"I learned strategies for self-belief and how to communicate without feeling nervous," she says.

Sophie didn’t just build confidence, she acted on it. She stepped up as captain of her netball team, mentored younger players, and even delivered a talk at her club about supporting women in sport.

And the impact didn’t stop there.

Today, Sophie is in her second year of university studying exercise science. She’s still part of our alumni network and regularly advocates for women in sport. "This program gave me the courage to dream bigger than I thought possible."

Sophie’s story proves that Empowered to Lead does more than build confidence for a season, it shapes leaders for life.

What Scholarship Recipients Experience

Empowered to Lead is a six-week virtual leadership experience for girls and women aged 15 to 65, across all codes of sport and all stages of leadership.

Participants join live interactive sessions, hear from inspiring guest speakers, and take part in practical activities designed to build skills they can use immediately, in sport, work, and life.

As one recent graduate put it:
"I used to think leadership was about being the loudest voice. Now I know it’s about listening, supporting others, and having the confidence to step forward when it matters."
